Reckless is (or used to be) my middle name --

Have you ever tried to jump off the top of a jungle gym when you were little? Go down a big slide with your head first? Run and jump off the halfway landing of a staircase? Climbed too tall a tree? Climbed a school fence? My favorite "stupid" thing was pushing a swing as high as possible and jumping off into a prepared pile of leaves. Stupid, but so much fun!

I think I either tried or accomplished all of the above in my early days of kindergarten and elementary school. Needless to say I was told no, and I have gotten mangled on multiple occasions. Now I feel bad for my mom, for having to deal with my dirty and torn school uniforms day after day.

I'm not sure if I would've been diagnosed with ADHD if I had been born years later (or in the U.S.), but I couldn't sit still for the life of me. I could keep my attention for like a minute, and after that I was looking out the window and dreaming about what to climb next. On my report card, there was always a mark taken off for lack of patience :D Considering how many classes I skipped because I got too antsy (I also figured out how to imitate my mom's writing to write excuse notes... sorry mom!), it's a miracle they didn't fail me then. (Thank you, generous teachers. You probably knew I was writing those notes.)

Now that I've grown up (or maybe I just got tired) I don't have nearly as much an urge to climb trees, though I still do. As adults, we become much more afraid of consequences: of looking stupid, of being injured, or of becoming sick. That's good most of the time, because it's inherent in our nature to protect ourselves. When that's bad is when your fear is holding you back to reach your potential.

Sure, doctors may still tell me to avoid big crowds, my mom would probably be worried, and Daniel is probably skeptical if I'd be able to recover. But imagining the rush I got jumping off a jungle gym (which may not be such a hot idea -- I realize that), I got a round-trip bus ticket to Vancouver to see my friends! I know, it's not that far, but this is a big deal after being nearly bedridden half of the time for two years. I'll take my chances, because I feel like I almost can.

I'm getting an IV for nutrition/pain management and an energy injection tomorrow, too, so that would certainly help. If I'm feeling dead, I'll just rest over there!

I'll try to take it easy when I'm there -- I'll try to spend my days there like I do here as much as possible. Two to three marbles a day. I hear they are having some power outage, too (though that may be fixed by the time I'm there), in downtown, so that might contribute to having a slow life as well. (Weird I don't find power outages annoying now, because it's about my speed.)

Maybe the rush of adrenaline and dopamine would boost my immune system and bring up my white blood cell count! Who knows?

Yearning to spread my wings --

Another beautiful summer in Seattle is upon us, and I'm amazed everyday how beautiful the sky is.

But.

I feel... trapped.

I tell myself, by all accounts I should be happy. I'm blessed enough that I have time to take care of myself, so I can get better. I live in a wonderful place, with a wonderful husband, with wonderful cats, surrounded by caring friends. All four (!) of our parents are coming to visit this summer. (Thank you!)

Maybe it's the fact everyone travels more in summer. I hear of people's summer plans, and I hear that pesky voice in the back of my head. "I love to travel, too!"

I've been avoiding any rides longer than 30-40 minutes for the past two years for the most part, because the vibration from bumps on the road hurt a lot. While my pain is better managed now with different tactics, the fact it hurts hasn't changed. As even sitting in a movie theater for 2 hours would make me very sore, going on a plane seemed to be out of the question. (Good for lessening my carbon footprint, though! :D)

Now I'm questioning that judgment: If I'm hurting anyway, does it matter if I'm traveling and hurting at the same time?

Undoubtedly any prolonged trip would cost me dearly in the following days, but is avoiding long(er) trips altogether worth feeling trapped? That's my current golden question, because I'm pondering if I want to go see a friend in Vancouver who's just lost her brother unexpectedly and is there for a couple of weeks to make arrangements. A mere three hours away (well, more like four by bus/train, since I couldn't drive that long). I keep hearing her voice on the phone, "I wish I could see you."

I don't know the right answer at this time. I'm hoping it'll come to me. I feel like a penguin, flopping its little wings on the side, wondering if I am in fact a bird... "Maybe I can fly if I really wanted to?" Penguins accomplish amazing things in their lifetime, traveling long miles, don't they? Maybe I can, too.

"I've learned that you shouldn't go through life with a catcher's mitt on both hands; you need to be able to throw some things back."
- Maya Angelou

Weather: Another sunny day! 38°F
Energy Level: 3 out of 10
Mood: 6/10
Health: 3/10

The weather outside is frightful
Inside it's all delightful

It is fitting that it's Thanksgiving time, because I've been trying to be more thankful lately.

Today it wasn't so hard to be thankful. We went over to our friends Ray & Sondra's house, where they have five beautiful children. The four older girls all drew me a wonderful, imaginative picture to cheer me up when I first became really sick; it was nice to see them so I could finally thank them in person.

Sondra took it upon herself to provide me enough things I could eat -- stuffing-and-butter-free turkey, dairy-free mashed potatoes, vegetables, and even a gluten/dairy/egg-free brownie. We brought some wild rice stuffing, maple glazed yams, and gluten-free vegan "cheese"cake. Needless to say, I was thankful for Sondra's thoughtfulness and stuffed.

It was a big deal to go, because they live about an hour away, and I hadn't really ridden in a car for over 30 minutes in the past year because of the pain I get from all the bumps on the road.

Yes, it did hurt, but it was totally worth it. I look at it as a rehabilitation, to re-increase my radius of activities. Sometimes you have to do things that hurt to expand what you can do.

The experience today reminded me of one of the Maya Angelou quotes Sondra recently sent me, above. As an adult, we learn to defend ourselves; we sometimes become afraid to expand our horizons, so we can protect what we currently have. Now that I feel a little better than before, I had become afraid of hurting more again. I should take off one of the catcher mitts!

I'm getting the travel bug, and now, I'm dreaming of the day when I can hop on a plane and go home to Japan again. One step at a time, though.

Should I say adieu to my pocket rocket? -

Weather: Sunny! It's a miracle! 64°F
Energy Level: 2 out of 10
Mood: 4/10
Health: 3/10 (ow-ow)

It figures -- it's a rare sunny day in Seattle, when I feel completely dead. (I had my IgG shot yesterday.)

I'm realizing that the urge to sell my car is almost directly correlated to how much I'm hurting.

We've been dabbling with the idea of selling our now only car, so we would be encouraged to bike/bus/use Flexcar in a pinch. Mostly, I'd been saying it's for economical and ecological reasons. You know, to put our money where our mouth is, since I'm not driving much anyway.

As I was driving to my appointment yesterday, though, I realized that perhaps it was more than that.

My arms, chest and back have been hurting a LOT, and as I drove, I wondered if it was because I had driven a little more in the past couple of weeks. (I got cocky. )

Then it hit me: Maybe I only seriously considered selling my car, because the car reminded me what I can't do.

I used to luuuuve driving my car. When I lived in LA, I would drive at night on my own, just to blow off some steam.

Perhaps it was the breezy feeling of independence driving gave me.

Now, my beloved pocket rocket (that's VW GTI - I'd always wanted a dark blue Golf) mainly collects dust in the garage. Makes me sad to look at it, because I can't bring out its full potential, and because I can't handle it.

So, like how I've been giving away cute heeled shoes that hurt me too much left and right, I'm tempted to get it out of my sight.

But will I be able to drive more in the future? I don't know. It's so hard to guess how I'll feel a month or a year from now. In some ways,
selling my car almost seems like admitting continued inability -- like breaking up with someone and admitting I'm incapable of having a relationship right now, instead of sticking it out when the relationship hit a rough patch.

I guess letting it go would be a rational thing to do, since I can't justify the cost of ownership when the car is hardly being used. It's probably wise to use the money for medical bills. Except it's not always easy to make rational decisions -- I am an emotional creature, though I don't like to admit it.

Pain + Martinelli's = Happiness -

Weather: Another lovely sunny day in Seattle! 69°F
Energy Level: 3 out of 10 (hmm.)
Mood: Pretty good, actually
Health: Still a little dizzy, and... read on.

↑ Now (memory in the making)

I'm a lucky, lucky girl with a very nice husband. Currently this girl is learning to pace herself.

I woke up feeling like someone beat me up with a stick during the night (I don't think Daniel did that - I didn't find a stick anywhere) and I'd completed a triathlon without properly training for it. (Normally I wake up feeling like I'd completed a marathon without completely training for it, which I have done in real life. I've never completed a triathlon, but you get the gist -I'm assuming it hurts more than a marathon.)

With a very painful throat, I looked in there to see if I'd gotten a strep or something. While I didn't see white spots in the back of the throat, there were little red spots like bug bites everywhere. Eek.

This may be due to the fact I sat out in the open to count traffic for Cascade Bicycle Club yesterday for a couple of hours. They are advocating for the original Seattle Bicycle Master Plan, some of which could crumble under some pressure from a minority of local businesses in Fremont, by providing the city with a more current and accurate traffic count/traffic makeup (what % is industrial trucks, passenger cars, bicycles, pedestrians, etc.). So they needed volunteers to count the rush hour traffic.

(If you live in Seattle area and want a safer city for alternative transportation options, contact the Mayor here!)

I'd been dying for a chance to volunteer to contribute to the community in some way, because while I've been sick, I felt like I was not contributing to the society.

The condition probably could not have been much better. It was a pleasant sunny weather in the 70s yesterday, but in the last 30 minutes of the rush hour, the street corner I was sitting on turned into a complete shade and I got chilled.

I've been trying to get over a chronic Epstein-Barr virus (mono virus) infection for the last 5-6 months or so - maybe I wasn't ready to be out in the open that long. Crap.

I stumbled back home, totally cold and dizzy from following numerous cars on the road with my eyes. (I didn't think it would be all that bad, sitting there and counting traffic, but holding up the clipboard and counting hundreds of cars zipping through the intersection were not easy for the current version of me.) Now, although it's 75 degrees in our place, I'm in the long warm alpaca wool sweater Daniel got me from Peru, complete with L.L. Bean slipper socks. Oh well.

So this morning I called a nurse, who recommended a wait-and-see approach for now, with warm salt water gargling and soft diet (chicken broth, warm apple juice, etc.) for the day. Upon hearing this Daniel jumped to the occasion, ran (or walked) to the nearby store and brought me back organic chicken stock and Martinelli's cider - all before going to work!

(Now as I write this, I'm finding myself a little annoying... sorry Daniel.)

↑ Then (sweet memories)

Martinelli's juice holds a special place in my heart, because my mom used to buy the little 10 oz. round bottle (which was completely overpriced and totally expensive, being an import, and dollar used to be much more expensive against yen) when we were younger, and my brother and I used to share one. It was sweet like no apple juice in Japan (they tend to make Japanese apple juices with more tang - different species of apple - which I now like). It was like drinking honey, and when we had one it was a big treat. (I now dilute it with water, because it's almost too sweet as is!)

Bonus: Martinelli's web site's FAQ section states that "all of the products that Martinelli's manufactures are gluten-free." Yeah!

Wow, now I have a giant bottle of Martinelli's. I have such a nice husband. :-)))
