Re: Gluten-free cosmetics (additional info) -

It took a few days, but I just heard back from Clinique about their lipstuffs (I just made that word). So their formulations (in regards to gluten) are not shade specific.

Here's their reply (I made the relevant part red):
===================================================
Thank you for your interest in Clinique.

While a formulation may contain no wheat, oat, barley or rye derivatives, for the benefit of our gluten-sensitive consumers who may have cross-sensitivities, Clinique takes the extra precaution of including corn, rice and soy in our research.

A vast number of raw materials from many different suppliers and sources are used in the manufacture of Estee Lauder Companies' products. It is therefore not possible for us to fully guarantee that our products are completely free of ingredients that may elicit an allergic response in highly sensitive individuals who react to gluten. For example, it is possible that small amounts of a wheat sourced ingredient may remain on shared manufacturing equipment even after a thorough cleaning. We therefore recommend that you discuss this with your physician, because consumer safety is of utmost concern to us.

With regard to your inquiry, gluten is not shade specific. Colour Surge Lipstick contains corn and soy. Superbalm Tinted Lip Treatment contains barley extract and wheat germ extract. Full Potential Lips Plump and Shine contains soy. Almost Lipstick does not contain gluten.

We trust that the above addresses your concern. We hope you will look to Clinique for all your skin care needs.
===================================================

Hmm. It sounds good, but they're basically saying, "We try to be careful, but look, we're a big company with lots of subcontractors - so whether you want to take a risk with cross contamination is up to you." I do like their Almost Lipstick line... tempting, but Daniel would probably tell me to err on the safe side.

On the other hand, Kiss My Face brand says in their FAQ section:
===================================================
Q:* Do your products contain Gluten?

A: No, most are gluten-free. Here is the list of products in our line that DO contain Gluten:

[Then they list a bunch of products which contain gluten.]
===================================================

Very nice! I like this company. (But I just found out one of the shampoos I use is in this list. Oops.)

All in all, it seems that I just have to research some and decide if I trust a product/company, just as I would with food (except the labeling standards are not the same, since cosmetics don't need to list up common allergens). Looks like Kiss My Face earned themselves a trusting customer :-)

Unlike severe peanuts allergy, I'm not going to die from it right then and there. (Obviously, seeing how I used to eat regular bread. Bread! Made from wheat flour! Wow, how I was wringing my own neck.) The effects are invisible, because it has to do with the damage on the inside of small intestine - so it is possible to be not strict about it. Seeing that celiac disease has probably knocked me out as a warning, though, keeping my (conventional) makeup for hours of vanity is probably not worth it.

It's like I've got an extra heart in a video game of life (by having met good doctors and solving a celiac disease puzzle!) - and I'm not going to waste it.

P.S. Estee Lauder brands include Estee Lauder, Clinique, Prescriptives, Origins, M.A.C., Bobbi Brown and Aveda among others - for a complete list click here.

===================================================

===================================================

Um, can you say that in the earthling language? -

Weather: Sunny! Clear! 76°F!
Energy Level: 3 out of 10
Mood: comme ci, comme ça (been on a French kick lately... maybe I'll study it again)
Health: Eek. Alive. I always vow not to overdo it on weekends, but I end up recovering from weekends during the week...

↑ The look I'm going for.

I've been trying to clean out my cosmetics drawer, so not to negate all my other treatments. This is hard.

I'm a sucker for cutely-packaged cosmetics. I think this addiction was exacerbated by the fact my late aunt used to lure me with department store gift certificates (a certified shopaholic, she had a "savings" account with department stores, which resulted in store merchandise certificates at the end of a term = more shopping) in my youth. Unable to afford
über-overpriced shoes or clothing in a Japanese department store with these store notes, I usually stocked up on shiny cosmetics.

Having moved to a short walking distance away from a Sephora store (for those of you who don't know, it's like FAO Schwartz of cosmetics) and a drugstore, I've racked up a healthy collection of lip stuff. I don't wear much makeup usually, but some of them make me feel happy just looking at them and playing with them once in a while. The cosmetics drawer was like my toy box.

Until now. Now it contains potential poison.

My super nice parents(-in-law) in Maine sent me this definitive book on celiac disease, written by the director of Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University and a science writer who has celiac disease. I've been reading bits of it when I'm not dizzy, and in it they talk about cosmetics.

The book says I can't have any lip stuff with gluten in it, because you ingest much of lipstick/lip balm/lip gloss. Makes sense now that they mention it - if less than 250 mg of gluten can set me back, this could be bad. (There seem to be conflicting opinions about skincare products, body shampoo, etc., depending on whom you ask in which country - for now I'm avoiding obviously wheat-y, barley-y, oat-y personal care products.)

Hmm.

I've obviously thrown out most of the packaging of what I'd bought in the past. Am I going to spend hours on the phone with each cosmetics company? It hardly seems worth it. But some of them are my favorite colors!

I've written to a couple of companies, one of which is
M•A•C Cosmetics. Apparently, even if something is in a same product line, each color has different formulation. So I need to ask about each color.

You typically get a response like this (no, they didn't highlight the wheat part red) - FYI, "Lip Conditioner" is just a fancy lip balm:

=========================================================

Who knew a lip balm could contain so many things? (And what the heck is
ASTROCARYUM MURUMURU BUTTER anyway?) This makes you appreciate that ice cream commercial they used to have, where the kids are trying to pronounce ingredients in one of the ice creams and the other one is made from milk, sugar, etc.

During these exchanges, I learned:
triticum vulgare (wheat) germ oil/extract = bad
hordeum vulgare (barley) extract = bad

Then I came across a list of suspect grain-containing cosmetics ingredients on one of the forums at Celiac.com (this was included in a response to someone else from Garnier, and as you can see, it doesn't include
hordeum vulgare - so it's not a complete list):
  • Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Flour (ha, this must be where Aveeno comes from!)
  • Cyclodextrin
  • Dextrin
  • Dextrin Palmitate
  • Hydrolyzed Malt Extract
  • Hydrolyzed Oat Flour
  • Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein
  • Hydrolyzed Wheat Flour
  • Hydrolyzed Wheat Gluten
  • Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein
  • Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein/PVP Crosspolymer
  • Hydrolyzed Wheat Starch
  • Maltodextrin
  • Secale Cereale (Rye) Seed Flour
  • Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Extract
  • Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Oil
  • Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Gluten
  • Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Starch
  • Wheat Amino Acids
  • Wheat Germ Glycerides
  • Wheat Germamidopropalkonium Chloride
  • Wheat Protein
  • Wheatgermamidopropyl Ethyldimonium Ethosulfate
  • Yeast Extract
Yikes!

For those of you who might be curious:
  • M.A.C. SlimShine Lipstick in color Elegant contains hordeum vulgare (barley) extract, triticum vulgare (wheat) germ extract and soybean extract = REALLY BAD
  • M.A.C. SlimShine Lipstick in color Bare contains ascorbyl palmitate (corn) and caprylic/capric triglyceride (soy) = Seems OK
  • M.A.C. PlushGlass in color Nice Buzz does not contain gluten (yay)
  • M.A.C. CremeStick Liner in colors Creme O' Spice, Gengerroot, & Sublime Culture, do not contain gluten (yay)
Although, as I called other companies, they basically told me they can't guarantee anything to be gluten-free unless it specifically says so. (Perhaps there might be cross contamination/possible change in product formulas?)

Maybe I'll stick to a plain beeswax lip balm and this Bare lipstick for a while. Apparently the more "long-lasting formula" a lipstick is, the more likely it would be to contain wheat (or barley). So Gwynn, who also can't eat gluten, was telling me when you get the organic/all natural stuff with no gluten, it lasts for about 1 hour (tops) and it seems to be gone from your lips. (Goes to show how much of the stuff you ingest.)

So maybe I won't be a red-lipped siren. Oh well. Whenever I put on makeup I looked like a kid playing with mom's makeup most of the time anyway; so maybe this is another blessing in disguise, to simplify my life...

-A
(Again too tired to do the Japanese part - maybe tomorrow!)

P.S. Yay, all Softlips lip protectants are gluten-free!

P.P.S. Note to self or others who may be interested: Maybe you can start a business making gluten-free cosmetics.

=========================================================

ASTROCARYUM MURUMURU BUTTER

triticum (コムギ属) vulgare (植物学で胚芽という意味のようだ)
germ oil/extract = 小麦胚芽油または

Garnier
  • Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Flour (エンバク粉)
  • Dextrin Palmitate (パルミチン酸デキストリン?)
  • Hydrolyzed Malt Extract (麦芽エキス加水分解物)
  • Hydrolyzed Oat Flour (エンバク粉加水分解物)
  • Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (植物タンパク質加水分解物)
  • Hydrolyzed Wheat Flour (小麦粉加水分解物)
  • Hydrolyzed Wheat Gluten (小麦グルテン加水分解物)
  • Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein (小麦タンパク質加水分解物)
  • Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein/PVP Crosspolymer (ポリビニルピロリドン・クロスポリマー)
  • Hydrolyzed Wheat Starch (小麦デンプン加水分解物)
  • Secale Cereale (Rye) Seed Flour (ライ麦粉?)
  • Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Extract (小麦胚芽抽出物)
  • Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Oil (小麦胚芽油)
  • Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Gluten (小麦グルテン)
  • Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Starch (小麦デンプン)
  • Wheat Amino Acids (小麦アミノ酸?)
  • Wheat Germ Glycerides (小麦胚芽脂肪酸)
  • Wheat Protein (小麦タンパク)
  • Wheatgermamidopropyl Ethyldimonium Ethosulfate (これもギブアップ)
  • Yeast Extract (酵母エキス)

いくつか、M.A.C.

La vita è bella, again -

Weather: Cloudy/Rain Shower; 66°F
Energy Level: 4 out of 10 (improved!)
Mood: Pretty groovy except for the headache :-/

A night (well, 4 hours) of sleep can do amazing things. (Sorry about the whining yesterday!)

In Japan they say "The crow who was crying moments ago is already smiling" (don't ask me why it's a crow) to describe how human emotions can change so quickly. I'm that crow today; last night everything seemed overwhelming, and today I feel like doors opened up to new opportunities.

I tend believe in subtle signs (mostly when they are working in my favor), and the signs were pointing in a good direction from the start. It's one of those great cloudy days in Seattle. We live atop a coffee shop where my massage therapist/friend Jonathan used to moonlight at, so I stopped in to get him a cappuccino so I can thank him for making me feel good. I figured, what the heck, I'll ask again about their version of chai mix. Low and behold - no "natural flavors!" Morning Glory Chai is made with just tea and spices. Yippie! I can have their chai (with rice milk even) - I'm so glad I didn't chicken out and talk myself out of asking.

Also I was thinking back to the conversation I had with the physical therapist for FMS Research Program, Scully. When I whined about not being able to get chai tea from the coffee shop, he laughed and said, "C'mon, you have to make your own chai from grinding spices with a mortar and pestle!" I have to give it to him - although he is now newly married to a lovely Indian lady, he has apparently been making his own chai for years. I got the instructions, thought about it, and figured it would probably taste better, the experience richer. So when Daniel comes home tonight, I'm starting from grinding whole spices in a mortar and pestle. What a wonderful experience - I probably wouldn't have done such a thing if I didn't have celiac disease. It's almost like it's a blessing.

I mean, what are the chances of talking to someone who is an expert in making your own chai tea right after being denied a generic one? (OK, maybe the chances are bigger in Seattle.) It's a sign.

I think I'm getting signs pointing me to slow down and live a little (not that I wasn't slow before, but since I'm slower than normal folks, even slower). The fact I can't eat out as much? Maybe I should learn how to cook better, be more efficient in the kitchen. (I'm not a very good cook although I'm very good at eating.) After all, we are what we eat. Maybe it's a sign that if I take these steps now and learn how to eat better, I'll have a much better life in the long run.

So I looked into some cooking classes around town. It just so happens we live across a cute boutique kitchen shop called Cook's World, where they offer cooking classes in the back. (And we are Cooks by name!) I think this is all meant to be. If we hadn't lived here, I wouldn't have seen the naturopath who practiced in the same building, and I wouldn't have found out I had celiac disease. And we live across the street from the cooking classes I want to take. How cool is that? Daniel wanted to take it, too, so we will take the classes together starting in July :-)

I got a giant piece of ginger, too, to try to pickle some ginger for sushi. If I can't eat the generic stuff, I figured I'll make some! I bet it'll taste fresher.

My mom sent me some good looking mochi (sweet sticky) rice and red bean paste, so maybe I can make some bean cakes one of these days. That would be another thing I wouldn't have done if I hadn't gotten sick. I'm not saying everything will be peachy all the time; I'm sure I'll hurt a lot some days, but I think my life overall will continue to be richer because of this experience.

Isn't life beautiful? :-)

"Flavoring" = Russian roulette - 「調味料」の、バカ!

Weather: Fair!; 62°F
Energy Level: 3 out of 10

Yes, mom (in Calais), I am still somewhat "sunburned" :-) My also gluten intolerant friend Gwynn was wise in saying, "[After going through similar mistakes] I'd decided, 10 minutes of pleasure - I don't care how good - is not worth 4 days of my life." (As told to me after the bulgogi incident - which she called "a little R&D.")

I have been extremely sleepy and drained, and reading one of my favorite blogs Gluten-Free Girl, I realized other celiacs feel extreme sleepiness too when they eat gluten - among other things.

I get asked a lot what contains gluten, and Shauna James (the Gluten-Free Girl - one of my inspirations for this blog), being a writer, explains much better than I would in her "what the heck is gluten anyway?" post, so if I may, I'll skip typing virtually the same thing. (I might ask her if I can translate it someday for the Japanese portion of this blog, though.)

One thing I learned from her post (I'd read it before, but not with as much attention) is that food manufacturers are NOT required to list things they put ON the food. Yes, they are required to list what's IN the food, but not ON the food. If, say, Junior Mints candies' ingredients don't look bad to me, the candies could still be dusted with wheat or similar flour to prevent sticking. Yes. Even if they are corn tortillas, they could be dusted with wheat flour! Shauna once got sick from TWO Starbucks chocolate-covered coffee beans, which didn't list anything suspicious as an ingredient. Blast. So now I'm officially paranoid of any packaged food that comes in pieces.

Now that I've really felt the punishment (day 3+ and my stomach is still growling at me with each breath), I've been scrutinizing things in our fridge. Not that I didn't do that before, when I was diagnosed - but I must admit I have a soft spot for import foods, namely, Asian (Japanese, Korean, etc.) foods, so I was a little easy on them. ("This is probably OK...")

If everything went by the U.S. standards enforced starting in 2004 (or was it 2005?), things containing one of the eight major allergens would list any wheat used in the ingredients list, but that's not the end of the story, so I have to read every letter. (Wheat allergy is not equal to celiac since we can't eat gluten.) Because as Shauna says, other than the obvious sources like wheat, barley, rye, oats (oat grains themselves should not contain gluten but most oats are contaminated as they are processed/grown in the same places as wheat; you can get gluten-free oats here however), spelt (people with wheat allergy can eat spelt but not celiacs), durum, couscous, semolina, kamut, and triticale, gluten can be in things like (in no particular order):
  • alcohol
  • grain vinegar
  • fillers in processed meat, frozen foods
  • soy sauce (except wheat-free tamari)
  • miso (can often contain barley)
  • caramel coloring
  • "natural" and artificial flavors
  • modified food starch
  • MSG
  • lecithins
  • textured vegetable protein in veggie meats
  • emulsifiers
  • drugs and vitamins
  • maltodextrin ("most" in the U.S. is made from corn - imported foods are more mysterious - but why take the chance when it's not clear?)
  • "amino acids"
The actual list of everything forbidden is about two pages long, so I won't bore you here.

And food labels will not say on there what these things may be derived from (i.e. barley for caramel coloring). So one day last month after I got sick(er), we panicked when we realized we bought a bottle of juice that said "natural flavors." Juice! You would think I can drink those care-free, but not always. I called some companies to ask what these "natural flavors" were made from; some were helpful, but other times the customer service reps sounded unsure - so I just avoid those.

Then there are other companies like Ricola (which I love when I have sore throat), who say on their website that their product is "99% gluten-free." (They are basically saying, "well, we didn't tell you it was 100% gluten-free!" to cover their butts in case someone gets sick.) What the heck does that mean? I'm guessing they may or may not dust the candies with flour or another similar substance.

The thing that plagues me the most is "flavors" or "amino acids" that are rampant in Asian foods. One of those amino acids can be glutamate (a.k.a. glutamic acid). Yes, the name sounds ominous, and it is indeed bad news. It's something used to make MSG, but can also be used as a standalone flavoring. In 1908 this famed chemistry professor at Tokyo Imperial University (now University of Tokyo, my dad's alma mater), Kikunae Ikeda, found that one of the chemical roots behind umami (savoriness) in konbu seaweed was glutamate, and also patented the manufacture of MSG (in 1909 with a Japanese company, Ajinomoto).

Some in Japan say that "flavor enhancer" (or MSG) was one of the 10 greatest inventions from Japan. I respect that his intellectual curiosity led him to this discovery, but I despise what happened afterward (some of this is very personal of course)! We all know that chemically produced MSG is bad for us and kills our taste buds - why, why did they have to make it into a runaway product?

The original patented product - Ajinomoto - does not seem to contain gluten, as they say their "amino acids" are derived from cane sugar. (It contains "food starch," though, which makes it a gluten suspect.) But there are a slew of other companies in Japan and China (largest producer around) who make glutamate from a wheat-derived source or other similar grains. To make matters worse, imported foods don't adhere to the same standards as the foods in the U.S., so the labels are always sketchy. It may say "flavor," it may say "amino acids," or sometimes it says nothing at all but may still have these things. (I look at Japanese food products whose labels I can read, and I can often spot a discrepancy between the Japanese version of ingredient list and the English version - so I imagine the situation is similar for other Asian products.)

Just when did people decide that everything needed additional "flavoring"? Weren't natural flavors of things enough? I think this is a lesson in greed: too much of a good thing is bad.

I'm respecting my maternal grandmother more and more nowadays (although for years she made these "wellness pills" partially from eggs which I was unknowingly allergic to - she only wanted best for us). When I was little, she took me to this co-op workshop where we learned how added coloring was unnecessary and bad for us, and she was a stickler for everything natural. Packaged ramen? Tragedy! Packaged candies? Eat fruits.

Grandmothers do know the best.

Tonight I've discovered my beloved umeboshi (salted, pickled plums) and other things in our fridge contained "amino acids." (Just exactly WHAT amino acids?) My trash may be bigger tomorrow, but for now I'm fantasizing I can still eat them if I so desire.
-A

P.S. To those of you who are diagnosed with mysterious "irritable bowel syndrome" (IBS) and/or migraines: Under a nutritionist/dietitian's guidance, you might try going without one of suspect food allergens one by one, or gluten in an "elimination diet" - a lot of undiagnosed celiacs are misdiagnosed with IBS and migraines.

P.P.S. I think I found the culprit in Ricola candies - "color (caramel)"!!! I don't know how I missed that before. They present themselves like such an all-natural-ish company - with all those swiss herbs - yet they had to add coloring. Dang it.

what the heck is gluten anyway?

「この "natural flavors" の原料は何?」

Confession of a sleepless addict -

Weather: Cloudy/Rainy, 55°F (as of 3:45 am)
Energy Level: 2 out of 10 (as of 4:00 am, though)

I had a relapse.

I've never taken up smoking, but I imagine this is what it must feel like when trying to quit. You know that it's good for your health to quit, and you try with all your might not to get close to that carton - and you catch maybe a whiff of that smoke on street, remember what it feels like to inhale and feel that relief - before you know it, you have a cigarette between your fingers.

I'm imagining, of course.

I know in my head I'm not supposed to have gluten = wheat = (regular) soy sauce. I think I've tried to maintain a pretty positive attitude thus far since I found out (after a grieving period in which I felt like life was unfair, of course), but the cause-and-effect relationship (I eat it → I get sick) must not have been pounded into my body yet.

I was walking along on the sidewalk, unconsciously hungry, after my doctor's appointment on Friday. As it happens, I have a very keen sense of smell. I caught a whiff of Korean BBQ meat (bulgogi - marinated in a solution most likely containing regular soy sauce) from the nearby Japanese take-out restaurant (low-cost Japanese places around here are almost always run by Korean folks - and they almost always do better Korean BBQ style dishes than Japanese dishes). Korean BBQ was one of my former-favorite things - I tried to replicate the flavor at home, but professionals inevitably do a better job. Before I knew it, I was sitting inside the restaurant, having placed my order.

The perverseness of the dish made it seem that much sweeter. I gobbled it down, thinking: "Maybe a little bit wouldn't hurt - maybe they made a mistake in diagnosing me. Maybe they were just kidding. Maybe now that I started feeling a bit better, my body can take it better."

No such luck. It tasted great - for the 10 minutes I was eating it - and the two days that followed (and counting) have been hellish. For the first time in a long time, I remembered the pain of body-twisting stomach cramps, my intestines spasming constantly, pain shooting through to my back, arms, everywhere - accompanied by a nice nauseaand joint pains.

Now I get it. I do have celiac disease, and gluten kills me. I read when I was younger that Native Americans have a more experiential approach to child rearing: Instead of telling children not to touch a stove, parents let them touch the stove - just long enough to feel the pain of burn - while watching carefully so the children don't hurt themselves too badly. I remember thinking, "Huh, that's clever. I bet that works well." I guess even as an adult, I needed that kind of lesson to really "get it."

I was completely ashamed of myself. So many people cared about my well-being, and there I was, seemingly turning back the progress. I couldn't tell Daniel what I had done for almost a day. After all he had done for me since I became ill, it seemed so ungrateful for me to sabotage my progress.

But I couldn't keep a secret from him, so I fessed up and apologized. He was nice as usual with a good sense of humor. Unable to stop chuckling he said, "You don't have to be sorry for me, and I do find it kind of funny - I keep picturing you sitting at that restaurant, excited [to have the forbidden fruit] and looking guilty." This made me laugh through my tears. It is funny.

When he said it's like when he gets tempted to go play outside without sunscreen, I laughed some more. I used to get mad at him in relentlessly sunny Colorado, every time he became sun-struck after 15 minutes and remained exhausted for the rest of the day. (He is a redhead on more paler side, so he can't really afford to go out without sunscreen - Seattle's rainy/cloudy weather has been heaven for him. It's as if he's allergic to the sun, so sometimes he starts sneezing.) "Why would you forgo putting on sunscreen, when you know this would happen," I'd say. When he responded "Sometimes I think maybe this time it would be OK - that I might get away with it," I felt like it made no logical sense. Now I know exactly how he feels.

Maybe my illnesses came on to teach me to empathize with others better. While I do feel bad that I haven't been much help around the house and we haven't been able to act like normal newlyweds, we smile at the fact this ordeal has brought us closer. I am fortunate to have such an understanding, redhead, husband. :-)

P.S. To those of you who worry about me, I am - truly - sorry.

Gluten-free, dairy-free "ice cream"! -

Being a celiac who can't eat any wheat, dairy nor egg protein, I often feel like I've got three strikes against me in terms of desserts. I never had much of a sweet tooth to begin with, but being a chocoholic and loving the smell and taste of coffee, there are certain things I miss, like the divine chocolate soufflé at Canlis, or Ben & Jerry's classic Coffee Heath Bar Crunch, or Baskin-Robbins' Jamoca Almond Fudge, etc. Oh, and Daniel proposed me in the Italian gelato shop we frequented in Denver, so we obviously like gelati (that's plural of gelato for you - I didn't know that either). I think these things are associated with good memories and thus hold dear places in my heart. (OK, and they are good - except for Baskin-Robbins; that's a leftover from my early teen memories.)

When I write like this I sound like I ate desserts all the time, but I really didn't. Being a bleeding-heart liberal that I am, we're signed up with Working Assets for long distance calls, so we'd get free coupons for a pint of B&J every month since we moved, and we'd never redeem them. Once we did, our pint would sit in the freezer for months (partially because we are absent-minded and we'd forget it's there). Even when we ate out, getting a dessert was a rarity - maybe a couple of times a year.

But as human psychology goes, once I found out I couldn't have them, I had to obsess over them. As a person who tends to dive into things with gusto (and cool quickly), I tried almost all gluten-free cookies on the market (just when did I ever have cookies at home before?), re-visited soy and rice ice creams, and thought about just having sorbets. Not nearly as satisfying.

I was walking through Whole Foods the other day after my chiropractor appointment, just to pick up some necessities like almond milk (I think it's better than soy milk - I recommend unsweetened vanilla). And this guy behind the sample table says, "Would you like to try a new frozen dessert? It's gluten-free and vegan (thus dairy- and egg-free)." Whaaat? He got my attention in less than a second. I was like, "It sounds like it was made for someone like me!" So I tried a sample - Cherry Amaretto flavor (seasonal) - and it was delicious! With no hesitation I asked him, "Where can I find them?" So I went home with the Coffee flavor and Cherry Amaretto flavor. Yum.

Turns out this stuff is made with coconut milk. It's also sweetened with agave syrup, which has a much lower glycemic index (the rate at which you get the "sugar rush" and subsequent "crush") than sugar - for someone like me who seems sensitive to cane sugar, it's a godsend. And it's all organic. What's not to like???

For those of you who are not in Oregon/Washington area, sorry - right now the company, Luna & Larry's Bliss Unlimited (the product name is Coconut Bliss) seems to be still expanding from their Eugene, OR location. I got mine at Whole Foods (I haven't checked if they carry them at PCC - if they don't, I think I'll ask them if they could). Those of you who are in NW, you're in luck! I urge you to try it so they keep making these! I think it's also a tasty, healthier alternative to ice cream, vegan/dairy-challenged or not.
